Adding Emojis to Discord

How to Install Custom Emojis in Discord

Adding custom emojis to a Discord server is a fun way to personalize your community. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to upload and install custom emojis in your Discord server.

Prerequisites

  • You need Manage Emojis and Stickers permission in the server.
  • Emoji files must be 128×128 pixels and can be in PNG, JPG, or GIF format.
  • A maximum of 50 static or animated emojis is allowed per server by default (more with server boosts).

Step 1: Prepare Your Custom Emoji

  • Create/Download the Emoji: Make sure the image is in PNG, JPG, or GIF format. Animated emojis must be GIF.
  • The recommended image size is 128×128 pixels.
  • Edit/Resize (Optional): Use Photoshop, Canva, or any online resizer. Discord will auto-resize, but uploading at the correct dimensions is best practice.

Step 2: Open Discord and Go to Server Settings

  • Open Discord (desktop or web).
  • Select the Server where you want to add custom emojis.
  • Click the server name at the top of the channel list to open the drop-down menu.
  • Click Server Settings.

Step 3: Add Custom Emojis

  • In server settings, select the Emoji tab in the left sidebar.
  • Click Upload Emoji.
  • Select the image file from the file browser.
  • Rename the emoji in the Alias field (optional). Names must be unique and cannot contain spaces — use underscores (_) instead.

Step 4: Use Your Custom Emojis

  • Type : followed by the emoji name, e.g. :party_parrot:.
  • Or click the emoji icon in the chat box and scroll to your custom emojis.

Additional Tips

  • Animated Emojis: You can upload animated GIF emojis, but only Discord Nitro users can use them across different servers.
  • Server Boosting: More boosts unlock more custom emoji slots.

Troubleshooting

  • If you can't upload, check that you have the Manage Emojis permission.
  • File Size Limit: Max 256 KB per emoji.
  • Name Conflicts: Two emojis can't share the same name — rename one before uploading.

By following these steps, you should be able to easily upload and use custom emojis in your Discord server!
